Our Story

The Be Loud! Sophie Foundation honors the life of Sophie Steiner who was diagnosed with cancer as a high school freshman.

Sophie received outstanding care throughout her time at UNC Hospitals, but she found there were aspects of her experience that were focused on young children and not tailored to her needs as a young adult.

Explode with light

Sophie’s Story

Sophie was determined that cancer would not define her. Her hospital rooms were decorated with pink elephants and clowns, she wasn’t able to leave the floor without a lot of effort, and none of the things she wanted to keep doing – dance, yoga and photography – were easily available.  Sophie was determined that cancer would not define her, and with the help of her family and friends, she was able to keep pursuing these interests even when she was in the hospital.

At the end of Sophie’s life, she expressed a wish to help other adolescent and young adult cancer patients maintain their dignity, identity and independence in the face of this overwhelming illness. Her family and friends started The Be Loud! Sophie Foundation to honor her wish.  The foundation is named after a poem Sophie wrote that includes the lines:

“Be loud

And move with grace

Explode with light

Have no Fear.”
