Mission
To support adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancer patients and their families at UNC Hospitals.
Goal
We support two closely related efforts with the overall goal of enhancing the independence, dignity and identity of 13- to 39-year-old cancer patients:
- Address unique needs. Cancer patients in this age group have unique medical and psychosocial needs and we want them to be treated in the way they need and deserve.
- Improve research efforts. The oncology world is becoming more focused on improving care for young adults, and we are helping UNC build a research-based program that advances the national understanding of how best to meet the unique needs of this diverse age group.
Outcome
We helped establish the UNC AYA Cancer Program so that now young adults facing cancer are receiving more age-appropriate care at UNC, and UNC has become a national leader in addressing the unique needs of this age group.
