Be Loud February Update

February 24, 2015 by Be Loud! Sophie

Where we are

232,000 is a big number! In gallons, that’s 5,500 times the volume of a bathtub, in miles, that’s 85 times the distance from L.A. to New York, and in tons, it’s 8.5 times the weight of the Statue of Liberty. And it’s also how much we have raised to launch a program at UNC Hospital that will help teen and young adult cancer patients hold onto their identity, independence, and dignity in the face of overwhelming illness. Thank you for all you have done to support our mission!

Where we’re going

These funds will enable us to meet our first goal—to hire a teen support liaison who will get to know patients when they are first diagnosed, and who will then arrange for them to do the things that bring them joy throughout treatment, such as dancing, writing song lyrics, or meeting other teens their age. Thanks to our extraordinary partners at UNC Hospital, including Dr. Stuart Gold, Chief of Pediatric Oncology, and Dr. Don Rosenstein, Director of UNC Lineberger’s Comprehensive Cancer Support Program, we plan to advertise the position this spring and launch the program this summer.
