About the Bands

Friday night brings one of the most influential bands of the 1980s to the Cradle stage. The English Beat first came to prominence as founding members of the British Two Tone Ska movement, with their classic first album “Just Can’t Stop It” fitting squarely in that genre. Three decades later Dave Wakeling has continued to keep The Beat alive and strong, touring with an amazing all-star ska backing band playing all the hits of The Beat, General Public, and songs from his new album “Here We Go Love”.West African dance band Diali Cissokho & Kaira Ba and Chapel Hill power-pop kings I Was Totally Destroying It open. After the Beat, move over to the Cradle BackRoom for an 80’s Dance Party with Perfect Kiss featuring DJ Fifi Hi-Fi (Sarah Honer) and DJ Bug Spray (Mac McCaughan). Your ticket gets you into the BackRoom for free that night!

Saturday night features the return of Preeesh!, an intergalactic supergroup featuring Rob Ladd, John Plymale, Robert Sledge and Brian Dennis. For those keeping score at home, that’s members of The Pressure Boys, Ben Folds Five, The Sex Police, Dag and so many more. Preeesh! will be bringing special guest vocalists to the stage and that’s about as much as we can divulge (or know). You need to be there.

We’re also honored to have Hobex reunite on Saturday night. Led by guitarist and singer/songwriter Greg Humphreys, Hobex melds classic funk’n’soul music with rock’n’roll – Marvin, Curtis, Stax, Motown meet the Beatles. They did it hobex-style for over ten years before Greg moved to NYC and launched a solo career.  Chris Stamey will open the evening with a special premiere of new songs from Occasional Shivers, a “musical entertainment” in the works, with guest singers Kirsten Lambert, Presyce Baez, Millie McGuire and more. Chris is a founding member of the dB’s and an acclaimed local producer and musician who has meant so much to the local music scene for decades.

Saturday afternoon is a family-friendly celebration of our incredible music community. Split between the Cradle Main Stage and the Backroom, we’ll be showcasing a variety of musical styles. PopUp Chorus is back so get ready to sing and be inspired by what we can all do (with some guidance). Billy Warden & The Floating Children are reuniting and, as anyone who saw them back in their heyday can attest, anything is possible. Well Respected Men feature a who’s who of local musicians (including several you will recognize) and will have us all singing and humming the music of The Kinks for days after. The Roman Spring concoct dreamy Americana-tinged pop and feature ex-members of Colourslide, Dillon Fence, Cravin’ Melon, The Veldt and Parklife. The Real Official brought the house down at our spring high school showcase at Cat’s Cradle and continue our streak of showcasing great young bands in our community.  We are also excited to feature Elayna Madden from Girls Rock NC. Elayna performed at the first Be Loud as a member of Cosmic Punk and Girls Rock is a program Sophie was involved in and one that has brought so much to our community. Stay tuned for a few additional special guests we will announce soon!

And move with grace
Explode with light
Have no fear”
